Bale Research |
 |
An extensive sets of test and research was done
on straw bale and straw bale wall systems with funds
from a grant from the California Department of Food
& Agriculture. The EBNet put together a team of
engineers, architects, contractors and educators
to conduct the investigations over the last two
years. They published results on load bearing structures,
out- of-plane and in-plane load tests, properties
of earth, lime, and lime-cement plasters, moisture
tests, and more.
These tests have been published for the public's
use on the EBNet website. Fell free to browse
and use the results of their hard work.

Old Cell Phones |
 |
Each year 130 million cell phones are discarded.
This adds up to 65,000 tons of toxic garbage. Most
of the public assumes the phones are small and their
impact on the environment is minor. This is a common
mistaken.
Unfortunately these phones are full of toxic
chemicals and hazardous materials. Some of these
substances include arsenic, antimony, beryllium,
cadmium, copper, lead, nickel and zinc. It is
important to keep these cell phones out of our
landfills.
Find a location to donate your old cell phone.

An Interview with Jon Jandai and Janell Kapoor
The Natural Building Colloquium is an annual
gathering of builders and teachers from around
North America and beyond. This year's colloquium
took place in October at a camp in southern Oregon.
One of the most exciting presentations was by
Jon (pronounced "Jo") Jandai from Thailand and
Janell Kapoor of Kleiwerks in North Carolina,
who presented their recent work teaching earthen
building in Thailand. Following their slide show,
Michael G. Smith of the CobWeb, Margie Bushman
of Hopedance Magazine, and Joseph Kennedy of Builders
without Borders sat down with them to ask some
questions.
Click below for the full question and answer
interview.
