You may not think of Coinstar (those machines that you can turn your spare change into dollars) as an eco-friendly business, but they are doing a good thing for the environment. The billions of coins being saved throughout homes in America are an important resource, according to Coinstar's "Change For Our Earth" marketing campaign. Coinstar launched ChangeForOurEarth.com to show us how one can impact the earth through recycling coins.

Coins are one of the most durable products in the economy - lasting 30 years or more. The U.S. Mint produces new coins from limited resources and metals. Putting coins back into circulation, would decrease the need for mining and refining of copper and other goods.

Coinstar estimates that $10 billion in coins sit idle in American homes, or an average of $90 per household. If 10% of those coins were re-entered into circulation, this would save 3.2 billion gallons of water and the energy from 4.1 million 60-watt light bulbs.
